Lady Tigers 1-1 as they enter De Soto tourney this week

December 8, 2018 – Girls varsity basketball are in the middle of a De Soto Tournament this week after winning their first game against the Richmond Spartans and a tough second game 3-point loss in overtime against Cameron.

With his team entering this week with a 1-1 record, Coach Baxter has been impressed with the transition of last year’s zone defense to this year’s man-to-man defense.

Regarding the team’s improvements, Baxter said, “Defensively, especially in our first game, our defense was phenomenal. Our second game was as well, but there were a few weaknesses but we have had time to work on those during practice.”

Baxter added that it has been impressive to see the team’s new mindset shifting from the zone defense to the man-to-man approach.

Baxter recognized the girls as a group that doesn’t give up, a trait evident in their second game of the season against Cameron.

“They could have easily given up in overtime, but instead battled through the end,” Baxter said.

Baxter maintained her positive mindset as the team entered the De Soto tournament on Monday night, but the girls struggled to gain their offensive shot opportunities early in the first half and fell to a 21-60 lost against Mill Valley.

Regarding the opening game of the tournament, Baxter said, “This was a good challenge for us. We struggled to find the basket the first half, but came out still fighting in the second half, creating more shot opportunities.”

Baxter and the Lady Tigers will continue in the tournament facing Turner and battling for 7th place  on Dec. 8.
