Layton, Rogers, Wilmes qualify for state

Gavin Wilmes and Dalton Layton will finish their respective high school track and field careers at a state meet. Wilmes and Layton, both of whom graduated recently from Excelsior Springs, will compete this weekend at Class 4 state competition at Jefferson City High School. Wilmes will run in the preliminaries for the boys 300-meter intermediate hurdles Friday afternoon. If he finishes among the top eight, then he’ll run in the finals Saturday afternoon. Layton will compete in the boys triple jump, slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Wilmes and Layton secured spots at state by being topfour finishers at Class 4 Sectional 4 competition, held recently at Warrensburg High School. Wilmes finished third in the 300s in 40.53 seconds. Layton placed fourth in the triple jump, leaping 12.99 meters. Layton and Wilmes were among three Excelsior Springs student athletes to qualify for state.
