Excelsior Springs freshman first girl to wrestle at state
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Tiger freshman Lily Brower made Excelsior Springs High School history on Saturday, when she advanced to the state girls wrestling tournament.
Bower advanced by winning the 110-pound District 4 championship.
Bower picked up falls in the first two rounds, and then technical falls in the semifinals and finals to claim the district championship.
The top four qualifiers in each district move on to compete in the state tournament at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, which takes place from Feb. 20 to 22. At the tournament, Brower will look to become the first female from Excelsior Springs to medal in wrestling in state competition.
Excelsior Springs sophomore Jacey Brewer fell just short of joining Brower at the state tournament by dropping the consolation semifinal match that would have placed her in the top four.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association created a girls-only division for wrestling for the 2018-2019 season, but there were no state qualifiers for Excelsior Springs last year.
