Mules, Bulldogs to face off in the 52nd Mineral Water Bowl

November 24, 2017 – UCM’s Mules and UMD’s Bulldogs will travel to Excelsior Springs Dec. 2 to face off in the 52nd Annual Mineral Water Bowl.

The University of Central Missouri Mules (Warrensburg, MO), who, at 8-3, are 3rd place in the MIAA, will head off against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, who, at 8-3, are the NSIC North Division Champions. This will be both UCM’s and the University of Minnesota-Duluth’s third trip to play in the Mineral Water Bowl.

The Mules are coached by Jim Svoboda, who is in his eighth year at the helm. Svoboda has a 64-28 career record. This is his fifth post-season appearance.

The Mules offense averages 40.7 points per game, and 527.1 yards of total offense. Junior quarterback Brook Bolles has thrown for 3,485 yards, with 21 touchdowns, eight of which were rushing. He has a trio of receivers to choose from. Senior Jaylen Zachery with 833 yards, junior Kyrion Parker with six touchdowns, and junior Seth Hebert, with 4 touchdowns. On the ground, the Mules are led by a pair of redshirt freshmen: Devante Turner, with 856 yards and 16 touchdowns, and Koby Wilkerson, with 739 yards and six touchdowns.

The defense is led by senior Diaron Rhodes, with 62 tackles, and redshirt freshmen Codie Bell, with 57 tackles. Junior Austin Miller leads the Mules with four sacks, along with sophomore Kolesen Crane. In charge of the defensive secondary is senior Monteze Latimore, with four interceptions.

University of Minnesota-Duluth come in with a 9-2 record, and first place in the Northern Sun North Division. Curt Weise, the Bulldogs Head Coach, is in his fifth year, and comes in with a 51-10 overall record, four NSIC North Division Titles, three NCAA appearances, and one overall NSIC Championship.

UMD offense averages 33.2 points per game, and 400.8 yards per game. They are led by quarterbacks Ben Everhart, a sophomore with 1,181 yards and eight touchdowns, and redshirt freshmen John Larson, with 1,001 yards and 13 touchdowns. Junior Anthony Wood is the leading rusher, with 678 yards and eight touchdowns. Redshirt freshmen receiver Jason Balts and senior Dominic Bonner have 893 yards and eight touchdowns, and 443 Yards with 8 touchdowns respectively.

The stout UMD defense only allows 16.7 points per game, to go along with 3 shutouts. Senior Zach Bassuener leads the team in tackles with 53, and sacks with six. Junior Gus Weding is close behind with 47 tackles. Freshman Karl Finkel has 12 tackles for a loss.

The Mineral Water Bowl will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, at Tiger Stadium with a noon kickoff.
