Quest-driven ES runners press on after losing Rebello to graduation

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The varsity cross country teams at Excelsior Springs are on a quest. Specifically, they are on a quest to continue their successes, which have included producing a state champion. Michael Rebello was the individual boys winner at the 2019 Class 3 state meet. Rebello, who graduated this summer, is the first state champion for either program. The teams officially begin their quests on Sept. 1 at the Fort Osage Invitational. “No matter what the challenges are, it will take an aggressive effort and willingness to improve to win the day,” 11th-year head coach Brian Smarker said. Leading the girls team on its quest will be junior Jacey Brewer, who returns as the No. 1 runner. Also returning are senior Zacalen Lohman; and juniors Kylie Albertson, Macey Chaney, Ava Ishmael and Lacey Miller.
