Road trip to Kearney ends in loss for Tigers

KEARNEY – The Tigers face Kearney on the road Oct. 30. Had the Class 4 District 8 Tournament followed the form of the first road game, their trip home would have been happier. The Tigers scored on their opening possession. They would not score any more, falling 22-7. The Tigers encountered little resistance from the Bulldogs in driving for their seven points. Sophomore quarterback Chance Moreland took the first play from scrimmage for a 22-yard run. Excelsior Springs had two more runs of more than 10 yards – a 13-yarder by senior Tanner Phillips and a 25-yarder by junior Ayden Dolt. The offense kept the football for 4 minutes, 15 seconds, driving 80 yards on eight plays. Phillips’ 4-yard TD run with 7:51 left in the first quarter and sophomore Trevor Stanton’s extra-point kick capped the drive. Kearney quickly answered by staging a 10-play, 51-yard drive.
