Excelsior Springs dipped below .500 last week in varsity boys soccer. And then, the Tigers got back to .500 this week. The Tigers dropped to 4-5 overall with their lone game last week – a 2-1 Sept. 25 Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division road loss to Smithville. The Warriors took the opening lead in the 26th minute, then struck again in the 66th. The Tigers scored their lone goal in the 79th minute, when senior Mason Wartner connected with junior foreign exchange student Theo Sturhmann. The finish was among 10 shots Excelsior Springs put on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Jaxon Hellyer had five saves for the Tigers. Excelsior Springs improved to 5-5 with Monday’s road rout of Grandview. As of this writing, they were looking to get above .500 with a meeting Wednesday with Truman in Independence.
