Tigers drop three matches under new best-of-five format

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – It did not take the Tigers long to play a varsity volleyball match under the new best-of-five-set rule. The rule came into play in their season opener against St. Joseph Lafayette. It came into play again on Sept. 8, when Excelsior Springs fell to Cameron in five sets, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23 and 13-15. Neither team could take a commanding lead. The first set saw the Tigers grab the lead early and never trail. With the second set 5-5, Cameron won three out of the next four points to widen the gap. But the Tigers clawed back to eventually knot it at 13 and again at 16. The momentum stopped there for the Tigers. Cameron won nine of the next 12 points to take the set. The third set looked similar to set No. 2, with Cameron jumping out and Excelsior Springs fighting back before suffering another six-point loss. Set No. 4 saw more back-and-forth play. Junior Kyli Crowley helped the Tigers keep it close by contributing fou kills. She had with 11 kills overall. …
