School was in session last week for the Excelsior Springs high schoolers who attended team camp at Tiger Stadium, according to varsity coach Jake Danneman.Danneman and his staff were “really just kind of teachers” as they led the Tigers through their offensive and defensive paces, he said May 28.“We’re really just slowing things down to help these kids learn,” Danneman said.In keeping with the emphasis on learning, the Tigers did “a lot of mental stuff,” such as installing their offensive and defensive schemes, according to Danneman. The approach contrasted with what’s planned for this week.“We’re going to try to work on the physicality portion – the hitting part of football,” he said.Slightly more than 70 athletes worked on the mental side of their game, said Danneman, estimating the turnout from the equipment issued to players.
