Tigers hang TD on Warriors in divisional clash
SMITHVILLE – Excelsior Springs refused to be blanked by top 10-ranked Smithville.
The Tigers posted a third-quarter touchdown in their 49-6 Sept. 22 road loss to the Warriors, who were ranked fifth among Missouri Class 4 11-man football programs as of Wednesday, according to MaxPreps.com.
Smithville built a 35-0 lead before the Tigers scored that touchdown in the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division clash. Electing to receive the opening kickoff, the Tigers watched as the ball took a bounce against them, with the Warriors recovering the kickoff at the Excelsior Springs 6-yard line. Smithville scored a touchdown in two plays and booted an extra-point kick.
Excelsior Springs’ new wildcat-style offense went three and out on the next series. Fielding senior Jason Starchman’s 31-yard punt, the Warriors staged a sevenplay, 51-yard scoring drive, capped by a 2-yard TD run and an extra point.
