August 28, 2018—The Excelsior Springs Boys’ Soccer Team began their efforts in the Staley Tournament Monday evening against Ruskin.
The Tigers’ passes connected well across the wet field leading up to junior Diego Zapata on the right side of the goal box, Zapata quickly found junior Marcus Cook to be open inside the box. Cook settled the cross from Zapata and buried the ball in the back of the net for the opening goal for The Tigers. The Eagles quickly struck back with a goal of their own to make 1-1.
Zapata had a first-half hat-trick putting The Tigers up 4-1 and junior Jaxon Pitts scored his first varsity goal making it a 5-1 lead for the Tigers. Zapata scored his fourth goal with two minutes left in the first half to make it a demanding 6-1 lead.
Senior Samuel Deleon scored back to back goals for the Tigers in the second half, senior Derrick Helt tacked on one more before the final whistle. The Tigers beat the Ruskin Eagles 9-1.
They rallied in their Tuesday evening attempt against Grandview but fell short 2-0. They continue their efforts Thursday, August 30th at 5:15 p.m., playing the third-place game. Coverage of that match will be included in The Excelsior Springs Standard’s Sept. 7 edition.
