December 8, 2017 – There was strength in numbers for the Excelsior Springs Tigers on Thursday, Nov. 30, as they opened the 2017-18 wrestling season with a triangular sweep of visiting Richmond and St. Pius. The Tigers picked up 24 points through opens against Richmond and 30 more from St. Pius. Excelsior Springs began the night with a 66-6 win over St. Pius and then capped the evening with a 54-30 decision over the Spartans.

Coach Rick Schwab liked how the new season started.

“I was very pleased with how our wrestlers worked to execute the systems we have installed in practice and the energy they brought to the meet,” he said.

The match of the evening came early in the Tigers vs. Spartans dual at 132 pounds when Tiger junior Hunter Williams met sophomore Rance Waigand.  Williams, a fifth-place medalist in the Class 2, 113-pound bracket last February, started the match off with a 39-second fall over Waigand, who was a Class 1 runner-up last year at 113.

Schwab said it was the highlight of the night.

“Two quality wrestlers that have competed several times in season and in the offseason with Waigand gaining the upper hand,” Schwab said. “Thursday night’s win by Hunter was a huge victory for him personally. He has committed and trained hard in the offseason and last was a good culmination of his efforts. I guarantee they will see each other at least once more this year and expect the excitement of the match to be very high again.”

The Tigers also got wins from Patrick Shelor at 152 pounds when he won by fall over Rueben Long, and Ethan Day also recorded a fall over Wyatt Johnson in the 113-pound match. In other contested matches, Trey Potter lost by fall to Austin Bowman at 138; Mitchell Berndt lost by fall at 170 pounds to Kenton Delana; Dalton Goodwine lost by fall at 195 to Ryker Plymell; and Logan Crippen lost by fall to Logan Claypole in the final match at 126 pounds.

Dane Milsap (145), Dylan Young (160), Rocky Mullin (182), Kole Kennedy (220), Cameron Huett (285) and Peyton Stalder (120) all won by forfeits.

The Tigers opened the night with an easy win over St. Pius, with the lone Warrior win coming at 220 when Jack Muirhead won by fall over Kennedy. St. Pius was open at 113, 126, 138, 152, 195 and 285. Both were open at 106 pounds.

Stalder opened the night with a 6-4 decision over Emanual Sarmiento at 120 pounds. The Tigers then won the next three contested matches by falls. Williams won at 132 over Gavin Ott; Milsap defeated Peter Perlik at 145 and Young was a winner at 160 over John Liberto. Berndt then took a 9-2 decision over Samuel Klingenberg at 170 pounds, followed by Mullin recording another fall with his win over Daniel Comer at 182.
