Tigers outlast Savages for season-opening win
SAVANNAH – Excelsior Springs opened the 2020 football season the way teams want to open a season: with a win.
Sparked by a big second quarter, the Tigers finished their Aug. 28 road meeting by downing Savannah 33-21.
“The key factor tonight was that our guys just believed in our system,” coach Mark Faubion said. “It’s not easy to see the end picture of how we do things, but our kids believed that (our system) could (work) tonight.”
The Tigers started the scoring on their second possession, when junior Amani Robinson broke through the middle of the line for a 44-yard TD run with 4 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Sophomore Trevor Stanton’s extra-point kick made it 7-0.
Excelsior Springs’ next scoring drive started when the Tigers took possession on a punt with 10:30 remaining in the first half. The Tigers staged a four-play, 77-yard drive, including a 68-yard run by junior Lukas Shelton. Junior quarterback Dacey Hall took the ball up the middle two plays later…
