Like last year, Excelsior Springs played Fort Osage for the Winnetonka Tournament title to cap its first week of the varsity boys soccer season. This time, however, the outcome was different. The Tigers, who defeated the Independence-based school 5-2 in 2022, fell 2-1 in the Sept. 1 rematch. Fort Osage struck first, scoring in the 22nd minute. Excelsior Springs senior Mason Wartner tied it in the 37th minute. Fort Osage then scored the gamewinner on a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Excelsior Springs, which was seeded first and had a first-round bye, set up the rematch with a 5-2 semifinal win over North Kansas City Aug. 30. Jake Zapata finished an assist pass from fellow junior Kolin Kincaid to give Excelsior Springs the opening lead. Kincaid then finished a pass from Wartner to make it 2-0. Zapata finished an assist from Wartner and junior Austin Collins scored back-to-back goals, with assists coming from junior Theo Stuhrmann and Wartner, to complete Excelsior Springs’…
