Tigers seek contributions from young players in varsity boys hoops

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Some young Tigers are expected to contribute, and quickly, this varsity boys basketball season. Coach Chad Wright, who enters his 21st year as a head basketball coach and sixth season at Excelsior Springs, leads the Tigers, who went 1-24 in 2019- 20. Wright’s group of student-athletes includes four seniors, four juniors, nine sophomores and two freshmen. Jordin Assel, Tanner Phillips, Kennon Reno and Jalen Soria are the seniors. Phillips and Soria, however, are the only returning seniors with varsity experience. Soria played in all 25 games last season, with Phillips contributing in 17 games. Soria averaged two points and one rebound per game. Phillips averaged 6.4 points and 2.8 rebounds. Junior Gannon Willis also returns. Willis – who played in 17 games last season, missing part of the season because of an injury – averaged 6.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Other returning players include junior Amani Robinson, who played in 17 games as a sophomore. …
