FLORHAM PARK, New Jersey – The New York Jets might be wishing they had not fired Excelsior Springs native Gregg Williams from their coaching staff. As multiple media outlets reported, the Jets sacked Williams on Dec. 7 as defensive coordinator following their last-second loss the day before to visiting Las Vegas. Williams’ decision to blitz on third-and-10 with 13 seconds left Jets cornerback Lamar Jackson in one-onone coverage with Henry Ruggs III, who caught the Raiders’ game-winning TD pass from Derek Carr. The Jets picked Frank Bush to serve as interim defensive coordinator. In Bush’s first game as Williams’ replacement, the Jets got thumped 40-3 by Seattle on Sunday at CenturyLink Field – their largest margin of defeat this season. As commentator Mason Smoller pointed out, Sunday also marked the most points given up by the Jets this season.
