FLORHAM PARK, New Jersey – A New York Jets safety who is haggling with the team over his contract has the support of Excelsior Springs native Gregg Williams.

Multiple media outlets have reported that Jamal Adams seeks to leave New York, rather than continue under the terms of his contact, set to expire next year. Adams has been with the Jets since 2017, when they drafted him out of LSU. During his tenure, he has received back-to-back All-Pro honors (2018 and again in 2019). His career stat line includes more than 250 total tackles, including 200-plus solo tackles; 25 pass defenses; 12 sacks; six forced fumbles; four recoveries of opponents’ fumbles, including one returned for a touchdown; and two interceptions, including a pick-six last season.

Williams, the team’s defensive coordinator since 2019, commented on Adams’ situation during a virtual press conference in late June, saying he has “got his back.” Williams also commented on Adams as a player, praising Adams’ intelligence, competitiveness and versatility.

“I think the world of him,” he told reporters.

William also said he could not “wait to get a chance to coach him again.” That, however, might not happen, given Adams’ dissatisfaction with Jets owner Woody Johnson. Media outlets reported Adams had taken to social media Wednesday to criticize Johnson, a U.S. ambassador who is the subject of a State Department probe into accusations of sexist and racist behavior.

Adams finds himself at odds with Johnson over Johnson’s alleged behavior and with the top brass in general over his contract just as Williams and the rest of the Jets prepare to head into training camp. The Jets are slated to train at their team facility in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Williams and the Jets are slated to open their season Sept. 13 against Buffalo on the road in AFC East play. The Jets’ schedule also includes a Nov. 1 meeting with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs and Jets were part of the

The Chiefs and Jets were part of the AFL, which merged with the NFL in 1970. While in the AFL, they each won a Super Bowl. Led by quarterback Joe Namath, the Jets defeated the then-Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III – their only Super Bowl title to date. The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl title by defeating Minnesota in Super Bowl IV.
