Williams’ latest coaching assignment merits sympathy

Poor Gregg Williams. That thought crossed my mind before my beloved Kansas City Chiefs faced the winless New York Jets, for whom Williams serves as defensive coordinator. It crossed my mind after seeing the final score of Sunday’s Chiefs-Jets meeting at Arrowhead Stadium – 35-9 Kansas City. It crossed my mind again Monday while driving home from Williams’ native land, Excelsior Springs, following a fun, rigorous session of pickleball at the Excelsior Springs Community Center with three congenial folks I did not know. Some football fans would not feel sympathetic toward Williams. After all, he is paid well to do something he obviously loves. In addition, he has enjoyed the rare honor of being part of a Super Bowl championship team, something he achieved with the New Orleans Saints. They would wonder why anyone would feel sympathy for someone in such an enviable position.
