Youth football program revives Roosevelt Field

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Much of Excelsior Springs’ football history is tied to Roosevelt Field. After having been abandoned for several years, it appears the field is part of the town’s football history again. Located near downtown Excelsior Springs, the facility was built in 1938. During the 1960s, it served as the home field to multiple undefeated high school varsity teams under coach Vic Bonuchi. It also was the home field when Excelsior Springs, led by Bonuchi, won the 1994 and 1996 Class 4A state championships. The last football game played on the field before being abandoned was the 2003 Mineral Water Bowl. After that, the property was sold to a private couple. For many years, the football field and stadium were not maintained. Enter the Excelsior Springs Football Association.
