Royals eying division lead as September approaches

The American League (AL) Central Division title race is heating up as August ends – and Kansas City is in the thick of it.

As of Friday afternoon, the Royals were in second place and trailing division leader Cleveland by 1.5 games. But they were 5-5 through their last 10 games and had dropped two straight entering Friday night’s meeting with AL West leader Houston at Minute Maid Park.

Kansas City remains in the thick of the American League (AL) playoff race, despite going 4-6 in its last 10 games.

The Royals were 66-55 and held the position of the final wild card spot entering this weekend’s three-game interleague road series with Cincinnati. Their 4-6 stretch began with a split of the final two games of a road series with Detroit.

Witt, Royals keep pace in AL playoff race

Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and his fellow Royals are on the edge of playoff contention with roughly six weeks left in the Major League Baseball regular season.

Led by Witt, who was named American League (AL) Player of the Month for July, the Royals were 64-52 and in third place in the AL Central Division entering this weekend’s two-game interleague series with St. Louis at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals have won seven of their last 10 entering the series.

Witt piles up the hits after All-Star break

Bobby Witt Jr. continues to power Kansas City and keep the Royals in American League playoff contention with his bat.

The young shortstop was leading the Royals with a .344 average entering Kansas City’s three-game interleague series this weekend with the Chicago Cubs at Kauffman Stadium. Following Thursday’s 8-6 home loss to Arizona, Witt was batting .696 (16-for-23) since the All-Star break.
