Dear Editor, In today’s world, we have news in the palm of our hands, whenever and wherever we want it. However, I have realized news that impacts us is more readily found in our local newspapers. Small town newspapers are the community’s backbone and provide much more than a link to an article online or a news clip on social media.

Last week, as an unusual darkness settled over the sky, millions of TikTok users experienced a startling phenomenon. The app suddenly went dark on screens, displaying a striking message that indicated the app had been banned and was no longer accessible. The sudden notification alarmed many users, sparking confusion and concerns regarding the future of the platform. Questions flooded social media as users speculated about potential shutdowns or significant changes. This wave of anxiety was palpable as countless individuals wondered how it would impact their daily interactions and creative expressions on TikTok.

Standing tall in the face of modern challenges In a world where social media has entrenched itself as the primary tool for communication, marketing and community engagement, stepping away from its grasp is nothing short of courageous. One local business in our town has done just that, and their decision deserves both our respect and our applause.

A recent Facebook post from the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation and Community Center (ESPRCC) concerning poverty has sparked rage and hurt within some Excelsior Springs residents. The post was in regards to an upcoming poverty simulation event to be hosted by ESPRCC in partnership with the Community Action Agency of Greater Kansas City.

Dear Editor, If the Excelsior Springs School Board gets its way, your property taxes will increase significantly again. As reported on December 10, 2024, the Excelsior Springs School Board “discussed a proposal to raise the district’s operating tax levy ceiling by $0.70, bringing it to $5.3089 per $100 of assessed valuation,” and “the resolution to place the question on the ballot was unanimously approved by board members present.”

Since the release of the highly anticipated live-action film Mufasa: The Lion King, social media has been abuzz with excitement and praise for its soundtrack. One song that stands out among the public is “I Always Wanted a Brother,” beautifully penned by the talented Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In an increasingly chaotic world, where negativity often invades our daily conversations and interactions, it is crucial for us to set goals focused on kindness, fostering positive interactions, and maintaining the vitality of our local newspapers.

Christmas time can stir up a complex mix of emotions. For most people, the holiday season is synonymous with joy and celebration. However, with adulthood came a feeling of dread for the holiday, to the point of me even loathing Christmas.
