Cooper Collins was perfect at the 52nd annual Plate County Invitational – at least where his win-loss record was concerned. The Excelsior Springs sophomore went 8-0 for the Jan. 19-20 wrestling tournament, including six wins by fall, and was the champion for the 120-pound division. His championship helped the Tigers take fifth among 16 schools with 250 points. Hannibal took the team title with 366.5 points.
Excelsior Springs couldn’t overcome a 29-point first quarter by Winnetonka on Jan. 11, when the Tigers fell to the Griffins 77-59 in varsity girls basketball.
Excelsior Springs couldn’t sustain early victories in its lone varsity boys wrestling competition last week – a 52-22 Jan. 11 road dual loss to Kearney.
Excelsior Springs came within 4.5 points of finishing second at its own boys wrestling tournament – and within 46.5 points of winning it. Led by three individual champions, Excelsior Springs tallied 143 points and placed third at the Tiger Classic.
