New building improvement plans were discussed during the monthly meeting of the Excelsior Springs School Board. The group agreed to remodel the high school’s weight room, as well as purchase weights and equipment, with funds not to exceed $400,000.

Cornerstone Elementary School recently conducted an open house to discuss safe room policies for public and school usage. Saferooms are created to save lives and provide free space for safety and saving lives for instances of minimum duration.

Dr. Arthur Mehrhoff discussed culture and heritage associated with developing regions such as Excelsior Springs during a recent Missouri Humanities Cultural Heritage workshop held locally. A Missouri Humanities council affiliate Mehrhoff provided necessary tools and resources to help communities reevaluate cultural heritage assets to revive the community in specific ways — incorporating tourism, economic development and programming to reach broader audiences.

The Excelsior Springs Good Samaritan Center recently hosted the 23rd Annual Tortoise & Hare 5K Walk and Run. Every dollar raised through registration fees went toward the Good Samaritan Center to help their mission of alleviating hunger and homelessness in the Excelsior Springs community.

The Clay County Sheriff’s office has one mission statement — to accept change, create value and inspire others while bringing communities together with integrity and transparency. The department has made progress in promoting a positive connection with residents through their community outreach programs.

Jobs Corps is the largest residential career training program nationwide, operating for over 50 years. Jobs Corps has helped eligible people aged 16 through 24 complete their high school education, train for future careers, and seek employment since 1964.

Shops, boutiques and galleries in downtown Excelsior Springs opened their doors for the annual Spring Open House. Each participating business handed out an Easter egg with every purchase, each containing a sweet surprise.

The monthly Substance Abuse Free Environment meeting (SAFE) at Excelsior Springs Hospital was held recently. SAFE, a prevention coalition that partners with Excelsior Springs Hospital, is for those passionate about creating healthy safe environments for youth around the tri-county region.
