Cooley Lake history inspires contemporary art show

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The landscape of a shallow oxbow lake about 8 miles south of Excelsior Springs has inspired the work of area artists and photographers in recent years. “They may have been unaware of its significance in the earliest days of Clay County.
THIS PAINTING, reminiscent of French impressionist Claude Monet’s work with water lilies, but also suggesting photographic realism, is an inspired example of Cooley Lake-inspired art.

Tigers go for gold at Olympic-themed soccer camp

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Coach Zac Ganzer and his Tigers got into the Olympic spirit during last week’s high school boys soccer camp at Tiger Stadium. In a nod to the latest Summer Olympics, slated to conclude Sunday in Tokyo, the Tigers continued a program tradition by staging their own mock-Olympiad.

Margaret "Anne" Mayes

Margaret “Anne” Mayes, 81, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, passed away with her family by her side on Thursday, July 22, 2021, at Excelsior Springs Nursing and Rehab.  

Born June 24, 1940, Anne was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret R. Partridge of Kansas City, MO.  

Anne was married to Jimmey W. Mayes on April 20, 1968, in Oklahoma and raised a blended family of five children. She retired as a church administrator at Grace Covenant Church.  

Darlene O'Dell

Darlene O'Dell, 82, died July 28, 2021, at her home in Elkhorn, Missouri, where she had lived since 1960. Her daughters were by her side.

Darlene was born September 18, 1938, at her home near Lawson, MO to Vern and Nellie (Mayes) Elliott. Darlene married Ralph O’Dell on October 12, 1957, and they enjoyed 61 years together.
