Excelsior officer shooting leaves perpetrator dead

An Excelsior Springs Police Department officer-involved shooting occurred on Oct. 1 near the intersection of Kearney and Crown Hill roads. The shooting left the officer with non-life-threatening injuries and the suspect, 65-year-old Carl J. Carrel, dead.

Powell Lake dredging to help prevent downstream flooding

Powell Lake on Wornall Road and Tiger Drive is being dredged as part of the Phase II project at the Excelsior Springs Community Center, according to Nate Williams, director of parks and recreation. Williams said the dredge is being funded separately though through Clay County ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds.
Dredging of Powell Lake has already begun so that it will hold more stormwater and help prevent flooding downstream. SOPHIA BALES | Staff
