ES softballers take second in home tourney
The Tigers reversed their fortunes last week in varsity softball.
After falling 12-0 Sept. 26 at Smithville and 7-4 Sept. 27 to visiting St. Joseph Central, the girls won three of their last four ballgames, including two of three Oct. 1 in their own tournament, where they were the runners-up.
Excelsior Springs mustered only three hits in the shutout loss to Smithville. Junior Chloe Carlyle picked up two hits, with sophomore pitcher Sydney Jones providing the other.
Against St. Joe Central, freshman left fielder Josie Casler went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the leadoff spot. Shortstop
Bella Loeffert, also a first-year high schooler, contributed a hit, two RBIs and a run scored. Carlyle, sophomore second baseman Alyssa Dean and freshman pitcher Kayden Rogers each collected one hit.
Rogers allowed three earned runs, struck out two and walked two in taking the pitching loss.
