Excelsior set for graduation

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The class of 2020 now has a graduation date. The Excelsior Springs Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to celebrate commencement at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1. “The ceremony will still be contingent on the CDC and Clay County recommendations as we get closer to July,” Excelsior Springs High School Principal Christen Everett said. “We didn’t want to pick a date in June or July that may get postponed again and again. We didn’t think that was fair to the graduates or their parents. Hopefully, in August, we will be in a more stable environment and we can honor these graduates before the fall semester begins.” Everett said the plan for now is to hold commencement in the high school gymnasium as normal. If the need arises to have people spread out, or to avoid confined spaces, such as the gym, the ceremony could move outside to Tiger Stadium. The decision will be made closer to Aug. 1.
