Keep companions safe this winter

As cold winter air sets in with snow in the forecast, Emily Johnston, veterinarian from the Excelsior Springs Animal Clinic, and retired veterinarian Pete Rucker, discuss ways of keeping furry friends safe and warm through the winter season. Johnston, a recent graduate from Ross University and new veterinarian at the clinic, said her goal is to provide quality veterinary care to their patients as well as educating clients on pet health. She explained that with the colder months approaching, pets should be brought indoors even when their owners think their undercoat is thick and there are no signs that the animal is cold. Johnston said, “Animals are still susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite after extended periods of time outdoors in freezing temperatures.” Rucker also noted that not just the temperatures can be worrisome for pets, as windchills can also be dangerous.
