New statewide safeguards for automated license plate reader technology add another layer to an ongoing local discussion about privacy, data security and potential misuse of the cameras.

Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Executive Order 26-18 on Sept. 16, one day after an Excelsior Springs public forum examined Excelsior Springs Police Department’s (ESPD) use of Flock Safety cameras. The order establishes minimum standards for state agencies and local law enforcement entities receiving state funding that use automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology.
