Powell Lake dredging to help prevent downstream flooding

Powell Lake on Wornall Road and Tiger Drive is being dredged as part of the Phase II project at the Excelsior Springs Community Center, according to Nate Williams, director of parks and recreation. Williams said the dredge is being funded separately though through Clay County ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funds. According to the National Ocean Services, dredging is the removal of sediments and debris from the bottom of lakes, rivers, harbors and other water bodies. By dredging, the lake will be able to hold more stormwater and prevent flooding downstream, hopefully helping to prevent flooding in downtown Excelsior Springs. The lake will hold stormwater runoff from the center property and be able to hold it and slow it down before going downstream, Williams said.
