Safe rooms approved for community use

The Excelsior Springs City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Excelsior Spring School District (ESSD) regarding the use of community safe rooms during weather-related events. The District’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) safe rooms are defined as “a building, structure or portion thereof designed to provide its occupants protection during severe weather events, winds in excess of 75 miles per hour or when a tornado watch or warning has been issued.” Excelsior Springs Fire Chief Joe Maddick presented the MoU to the Excelsior Springs City Council in order to establish a collaborative partnership between the council and ESSD to use the safe room at Cornerstone Elementary School and to establish responsibilities of both groups.
