Sheriff’s office adds safety tool for vulnerable residents

A new tool introduced by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office is already transforming law enforcement’s response to some of the community’s most vulnerable residents, beginning with a simple suggestion made at a luncheon.The Take Me Home Program allows families to voluntarily register loved ones with cognitive or communication disabilities in a secure database that deputies can access during emergencies. Within the first 24 hours of going live, 40 residents were enrolled.“Someone who works in the disability community first proposed a program similar to this to one of our commanders at a luncheon in 2023,” said Public Relations Manager Sarah Boyd. “He mentioned it to Sheriff Will Akin, who thought it was a wonderful idea.
