Cleaver, others in Congress, urge continuing effort to feed needy children

WASHINGTON – If a low-income family’s child cannot go to school to learn, then denying that child access to the free or reduced-price school food programs is unacceptable, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver II said last week. For some children, especially those with pre-existing conditions, the choice is between eating or risking exposure to the virus, Cleaver told this newspaper. He said the U.S. Department of Agriculture should feed at-home students. “Considering millions of American families rely on these critical nutrition programs to keep children from skipping meals and going hungry, it is the height of irresponsibility for the USDA to discontinue these waivers as many schools around the country remain closed,” Cleaver said. “This forces parents and administrators to make an impossible choice between keeping children, parents and faculty healthy, stopping the spread of the virus in our communities and keeping food on the table for the most vulnerabl...
