Marcum, Collins, Shipman earn medals at state tournament
Cooper Collins, Ryne Marcum and Wyett Shipman each came back with something from their recent trip to Columbia: a state wrestling medal.
Representing Excelsior Springs, Marcum and Collins both placed fourth, and Shipman took fifth at the Class 2 boys state high school tournament, held Feb. 21-22 at Mizzou Arena. The top six finishers in each weight division received a medal, per Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) regulations.
Collins went 4-2 to take fourth in the 120-pound division. The sophomore opened with a 3-1 overtime win over Seneca’s Keatin Burleson.
A loss by a 6-0 decision to Fulton’s Cole Blattner in the winner’s-bracket quarterfinals sent Collins to wrestlebacks, where he first defeated Richmond’s Declan Cockrum 7-5. He then defeated Knob Noster’s Mason Grosz 5-2.
