Helen Joanne Cockrum, 89, of Excelsior Springs passed away Dec. 22, 2025, at Liberty Hospital.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Mrs. Cockrum was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Chalk, Texas. She married Arvil Cockrum on Nov. 26, 1951. They remained married until his death and had four children – one son and three daughters.
She was baptized in 1974 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She and her husband enjoyed taking road trips and sightseeing.
She was a good seamstress, sewing for her girls and then grandchildren. Making quilts for her family was one of her favorite hobbies. She also enjoyed crocheting, making intricate doilies, tablecloths and blankets.
She enjoyed family gatherings, but was rather private and reserved around most people.
In addition to Arvil D. Cockrum, her husband of 61 years, she was preceded in death by her parents, Tucker Allen and Lucy E. Messick; and three siblings.
Survivors include her brother, Leon Messick of Mountain Home, Ark.; son, Troy Cockrum (Kathy) of Excelsior Springs; and three daughters, Sandra Folsom of the home, Debra Rico of the home and Sherry Gregory (Jack) of Branson.
Other survivors include 15 grandchildren, 39 greatgrandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
