The wrestling accolades continue to grow for Excelsior Springs alum Damon Ashworth. The University of Central Missouri redshirt sophomore recently completed an All-American season with a fifthplace finish in the 184-pound division at NCAA Division II national competition. Ashworth, who qualified for the national tournament by taking second at a super regional tournament March 2, was among three Mules who wrestled at Park City, Kan. Seeded seventh, Ashworth opened with a 6-4 win over Augustana University’s Cade Mueller, an unseeded wrestler. He then defeated the second seed, Ashland University’s Daniel Beemer, 8-6 in triple overtime. A loss by major decision to Kutztown University’s Matt Weinberg sent Ashworth to the consolation bracket, where he fell by first-period pin to the University of Nebraska-Kearney’s Billy Higgins.
