At roughly 6:53 p.m. Tuesday, Excelsior Springs varsity baseball coach Aaron Holst and his Tigers knew they would play at least one more ballgame this season. They just didn’t know who their opponent would be. It was around that time at Tiger Stadium that pitcher Lucas Dillman served up a fly ball to right field for the final out of Excelsior Springs’ 9-0 victory over Maryville in Class 4 sectional action. With the win, the Tigers advanced to the state quarterfinals for the second straight season. “We’re at least back where we were last year, with an opportunity Thursday to be magical one more time in May,” Holst said. With catcher Mason Danner calling his pitches, Dillman tossed a complete-game four-hitter to help the Tigers improve to 27-12 and return to the quarterfinals. “I have a lot of faith in Mason and I believe in what he sees, so whenever he calls something, I just follow it up with him and try my best execute what he calls,” Dillman said.
