Burton takes sixth at girls state tourney

COLUMBIA – Vada Burton got a medal to show for her final high school wrestling tournament. The Excelsior Springs senior placed sixth in the 130-pound division at the Class 1 girls state meet, held Feb. 22-23 at Mizzou Arena. Burton opened with a 3-2 win over Holden’s Tasia Lee. She scored first with a takedown late in the first period when Lee took a shot and Burton countered by getting behind her. Lee knotted it at 2 by scoring a takedown with less than 10 seconds left in the third period, but Burton spun out of Lee’s hold to score the match-winning escape. Next, Burton lost to Herculaneum’s Eddyson Reeves in the winner’s bracket quarterfinals 5-1. Reeves took a 3-0 lead on an escape and a takedown, both during the second period. Wrestling from the bottom position, Burton scored her point on an escape 6 seconds into the third period. Looking to score more points, Burton attempted a headlock and hip toss.
