Burton takes title in girls wrestling tourney
ODESSA – On Jan. 14, girls wrestlers from the Missouri River Valley Conference assembled at Odessa High School to determine who the conference champions would be.
One of those champions was Excelsior Springs junior Vada Burton.
Burton, 15-2, took the 130-pound title by going 4-1. She opened with a thirdperiod pin of Odessa’s Madyson White and followed that with a second-period pin of Clinton’s Bailey Pack.
Burton dropped her third-round match to Harrisonville’s Melaina Beachner, but still qualified for the championship bracket. There, she won by secondperiod fall in the semifinals against Holden’s Charlie Gregg, then avenged her loss to Beachner with a win by thirdperiod fall in the championship match.
