’Cats bring back old-drill to hone defensive skills

Orrick varsity 8-man football coach Matt O’Dellbrought back an old drill Monday as he and his staff continued to prep the Bearcats for their 2025 season.To conclude the day’s activities, O’Dell had the Bearcats run through “the circle drill.” The drill works like this: A player lines up on defense. After hitting a blocking/tackling dummy, the defender must read if the quarterback intends to pass the ball downfield or lateral to the running back lined up behind the quarterback. If the quarterback laterals, the defender must pursue the ball-carrier. If the quarterback rears back to throw, he must circle around the running back, acting as a blocker, and get to the quarterback.O’Dell learned the drill when he played 11-man football at Orrick, he said.
