Closing of schools impacts student-athletes
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Senior student-athletes statewide have held out hopes that their final spring season of eligibility might be saved.
Those hopes have faded away. On April 9, Gov. Mike Parson said Missouri schools would be closed through the end of the school year.
The Missouri State High School Activities Association had been leaving it to individual schools to make plans for spring sports. MSHSAA had planned to let schools participate in activities once schools were back in session, but coaches and athletes could not to take part in school-organized practices or games as long as in-class activities could not take place.
“The decision is very difficult for all involved, especially given the impact it will have on our students, parents, coaches, teachers and administrators,” MSHSAA Executive Director Kerwin Urhahn said in a press release.
