Coach leaves Orrick, returns to roots

ORRICK – A major connection to Orrick’s 2020 Class 1 state quarterfinal run, and back-to-back district titles in 2019 and 2020 in boys basketball is gone. Coach Matt Brownsberger announced in April he was leaving Orrick to teach and coach in Warsaw. His last day at Orrick was in mid-May. “(There are) not a lot of places that could’ve … (gotten) me to consider leaving Orrick,” Brownsberger said May 8 following Orrick’s high school graduation ceremony. One reason Brownsberger left was his ties to Warsaw. He began coaching prep sports there, he said. In 2005, he led the Wildcats to a Class 3 district boys basketball title. That season ended with a loss in sectionals to Hogan Prep Academy Charter of Kansas City, Missouri State High School Activities Association records state.
