Crushers pile up runs en route to runner-up tournament finish
An Excelsior Springs summer league baseball team piled up the runs in taking second in its division at the USSSA A/AA State Championship Tournament.
Averaging nearly nine runs per game, the 10-and-under Crushers went 4-2 during the June 21-23 tournament, held at the Capitol Federal Sports Complex in Liberty. But offense wasn’t the only key to finishing as runners-up, according to coach Richie Marsh.
“We emphasized taking extra bases and throwing a lot of strikes, and that allowed us to be successful most of the weekend,” Marsh said.
On June 21, the Crushers opened pool play with a 14-10 loss to the Andrew County Kings. They rebounded by defeating the Titans 10U 13-7, also June 21.
The Crushers opened bracket play June 22 by defeating the Titans again, this time 11-5. They finished bracket play by going 2-1 June 23, defeating the 643KC Blue 10s out of Blue Springs 9-3 and the Lee’s Summit Heat 9-3 before falling 16-0 in their tit...
