ES baseballers open week with loss to ’Tonka
Interim coach Cody Vaughn would’ve preferred a better start to the final week of the regular season from his Excelsior Springs varsity baseball squad.Facing Winnetonka Monday, the Tigers tumbled to the visiting Griffins 9-2.“Winnetonka literally beat us on every level of this game,” Vaughn said minutes after the defeat. “Good team over there. They took advantage of it. We couldn’t get anything going.”Winnetonka got its offense going in the first inning, tacking up two runs. The Griffins added three runs in the top of the second to make it 5-0.Excelsior Springs posted a run in the bottom of the second.The Griffins boosted their lead to 8-1 with a three-run third. Excelsior Springs scored its last run in the fourth. Winnetonka finished the scoring with a run in the sixth.The defeat followed a 4-3 loss May 8 to Blue Division and Missouri Highway 92 rival Kearney at Kearney.
