ES boys hoopsters edge North Platte; fall to ’Tonka, Ruskin

When the Tigers stepped outside the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division last week in varsity boys basketball, they won. When they played inside their division, they didn’t. Excelsior Springs went 1-2 for the week. After falling 75-28 Jan. 31 on the road to divisional opponent Winnetonka, the Tigers edged non-divisional foe North Platte 62-53 Feb. 1, also on the road, and then fell 100-60 Feb. 3 to visiting Ruskin in Blue Division play. Winnetonka dominated Excelsior Springs from the outset, starting with a 10-0 run. The Griffins led 22-5 after one quarter and 49-17 at halftime. The Tigers held the Griffins to 26 second-half points but scored only 11 themselves. Senior Damari Wesley led the Tigers with nine points. Other Excelsior Springs scorers were senior Trevor Stanton with seven points, sophomore Jake Zapata with four, senior Brendan Blackburn and sophomore Carson Gholson with three each, and senior Rakai Gantt with two.
