ES boys hoopsters tumble in runaways to Grain Valley, Grandview
Excelsior Springs was looking to end a losing streak in varsity boys basketball as the regular season was ending.
The Tigers had lost six straight entering Wednesday night’s regular-season finale at Oak Grove. The streak included two losses last week – 68-34 Feb. 14 to visiting Grain Valley and 97-37 Feb. 17 at Grandview.
Hot shooting by Grain Valley helped the Eagles claim a 20-11 lead after one quarter. The Eagles used a 12-3 run to snap an 8-8 deadlock to gain control and lead the rest of the way.
A three-point bucket by senior Brendan Blackburn got the Tigers within six (20-14) the second quarter. Grain Valley answered by outscoring Excelsior Springs 12-4 the rest of the quarter to lead 32-18 at halftime. The Eagles put it away with a 19-8 third quarter and a 17-8 fourth quarter.
