ES girls wrestling program boasts record turnout

Excelsior Springs girls wrestling coach Scott Schwab probably won’t have to worry about having open weight classes this season. Schwab and his staff are working with 22 athletes – the largest turnout in girls program history. Among those wrestlers are three seniors who seek to qualify for state competition, as recent graduate Vada Burton did last season: Alyssa Betts, Bailee Baxter and Jaylenn Hudlemeyer. Betts finished her junior season one win shy of advancing to state. Baxter battled injuries last season, but got healthy enough to compete at districts. ”I am looking forward to continuing to get stronger and helping this program grow throughout the year,” Baxter said. Hudlemeyer went 17-14 her junior year. “My main goals for the season are to get better from the bottom position and find ways to get myself out of bad positions, with my main goal of getting to the state tournament,” Hudlemeyer said.
