Excelsior Springs’ final varsity boys tennis dual this season was a close one. The Tigers scrapped with St. Michael the Archangel before falling to the Guardians 5-3 in the Class 1 District 14 Tournament May 7 at Lee’s Summit. Juniors Austin Collins and Theo Stuhrman notched an 8-4 win in No. 1 doubles. The Guardians took other two doubles matches, with Grayson Grove and Owen Peterson falling to St. Michael 8-4, and senior Colt Bowman and junior Jack Dearing bowing out 8-3. In singles results, Collins won the No. 1 match 6-3,6-3. Stuhrmann won the No. 3 match 6-0, 7-6. Bowman dropped the No. 4 match 6-1, 6-2. Dearing fell 6-0, 6-0. Peterson fell in the dual-clinching match 7-5, 6-0. Grove was leading his match when the Guardians clinched the dual victory. St. Michael then advanced to the district finals, where the Guardians lost to St. Pius X of Kansas City. ...
