ES netters trounce Lexington; fall to Chillicothe, ’Tonka

Excelsior Springs coach Richie Marsh likes the state of his varsity girls tennis team as the end of the regular season approaches. “We are seeing our girls getting better week by week, and that is the end goal as we continue to move forward,” Marsh said. Marsh watched his Tigers hone their skills last week, when their schedule included three duals. Excelsior Springs went 1-2 in those duals, thumping Lexington 8-1 Sept. 18 at Lexington, then falling 6-3 Sept. 19 to visiting Chillicothe and 6-3 Sept. 21 at Winnetonka. Juniors Shelby Stodden and Malaya Tedesco helped Excelsior Springs cruise past Lexington by winning their No. 1 doubles match 6-0. In other doubles results, first-year high schooler Laney Smith and junior Megan Riegel took the No. 2 match 6-0, and junior Rebecca McDade and first-year high schooler Olivia Deere fell 6-2 in the third spot. In singles results, Stodden won 6-2, Tedesco cruised 6-0, Smith won 6-3, Riegel won 6-1, McDade triumphed 6-3 and Deere won 6-2. …
