At press time, Excelsior Springs was hoping to get another crack at Kearney in varsity 11-man football.The Tigers were slated to play Van Horn Thursday night in Independence to open the Class 4 District 8 Tournament, with the victor to advance to play Kearney Nov. 7 in the semifinals of the singleelimination, postseason competition.Quarterback/punter Landon Marcum wasn’t expecting the Tigers to look past Van Horn for a chance to play their Missouri Highway 92 and Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division archrivals.“I feel like it’s pretty easy just going forward to focus on this week, especially with all the seniors we have not really wanting this to be their last game,” the sophomore said during practice Monday.Coincidentally, the Tigers faced Van Horn in 2024 with hopes of getting another shot at Kearney.
